My monitor is being retarded, help?

Okay, I’ve a Dell monitor. But when ever I try to use it, it states its in power save mode. Then it says to press a button and/or key, When I do, nothing happens.
My computer was built by me.
I would say the monitor is about 3 - 4 years old.
I checked the cord that connects it to the personal, and it is in place, screwed in.

One of two things come to mind. First off check the pins on the cable. You might have a bent pin and that isn't sending the signal to the monitor from the personal. The other making sure your video card is seated properly into the slot. If both of these ideas don't help then i would wonder if the monitor has taken a power surge or something.
