Could anyone help me to find the APF that I need to make my new Hp Dvd and cd writer install?

Posted in Hardware on July 29th, 2008

I’ve a Dell E310 Dimension Desktop running XP SP2 and my dvd and cd burner went out on it.. can somewhat still get them to play but not burn.. after a week of fighting drivers and codecs and roxio and sony and dell and microsoft.. I gave in and bought a external HP 1040e Light Scribe writer and burner.. with sigh… Nero software.

It has been a nightmare. I’ve finally uninstalled all of the things that even remotely resemble another burner on my machine and now it won't install the software from Nero because I’ve no APF doohickeys.. I forget.. I have brain tissue that has to be the consistency of maltomeal by now.. and need some help please.

Ok, so, make sure there are no conflicts internally. (dvd 1 is set to master, drive 2 is set to slave, and both on the same ide channel, they don't like sharing with a hard drive very much)

While you’re in there, check all the connections to be sure they’re in properly

Install the full driver package from the cd that came with your drive.

reboot

if this is still not working…

click start/control panel/ (in classic view) system/ hardware tab/ Device Manager button/ click IDE ATA/ ATAPI controllers, make sure you do NOT have DMA enabled, set it to PIO.

reboot

It might be a bit slower than dma, but more stable as it does not use all your cpu cycles.

Found this out the hard way..

By the way, does any body want to buy 4 or 5 sets of silver colored plastic drink coasters?

The cool thing about the external burners will install themselves the second they’re plugged into the usb port, if that's the case and your comp is missing a file your burner should install it, but it looks like that didn't happen, OK since nothing with windows is wrong other than the fact that you cant burn. ? Then what you can try is repair windows, its somewhat like reinstalling without wiping the drive or destroying any directories. This should fix the issue, and if it doesn't could be bad ports highly doubtful if the comp is somewhat new but have seen this happen before.
