Is my RAM really slow?
Posted in Desktops on July 29th, 2008
I purchased an asus p5n-e sli board and had 2×2GB 800Mhz RAM but didnt work reterned it to the guy and he tld me he just found out that ram dont work with the board so he gave me some crappy 400mhz ram and charged £40 if you look at this screenshot:
http://media.photobucket.com/image/ram/k…
does that confirm that my RAM is 400mhz?
did i get ripped off?
if you look here :
http://scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProduc…
(on the technical specs)
it says that this board supports 533 667 and *800mhz* RAM so why did he give me this 400mhz
i have a q6600 cpu and a geforce 8600GT and my personal runs choppy and takes time to open folder and i often see the flashlight torch thing going side to side when i open stuff is the problem my slow if??? is it slow anyway? btw didnt purchase any of it from scan.co.uk i was just using it to show specs…
Answer:
It is 400mhz, DDR2 that means double data rate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_data…
400×2=800mhz…
PC6400=800mhz which your screenshot also states.
So, you have 800mhz pc6400 ram in there now. The question is, where is the old ram? did he actually give you new ram, or was the old ram in the wrong slots? What brand was the original ram, and what timings? Did he just fix it and charge you for ram he never added? Maybe swap out and give you lower CAS timings…
To make desktop react faster, you can set it for performance. That might help. For gaming, I advocate a better graphics card for your system.
You got ripped off, because the guy should have gave you back the old memory, or not charged you if he fixed it. Maybe just for labor. Some times all you need to do is change memory from slot 1,2 to 1,3 or whatever.
Try to find out what he did with the old/new memory
Answer:
Was the replacement ram 2 sticks?
Typically you need 2 to get the double data rate, making it upto 800mhz
But you were deffinatly feeced, if he charged you for ram that will have been cheaper he should havve given you some money back.
Answer:
The original ram you had (assuming he didn't hand you some other ram thinking they were the same by mistake) were compatable with your motherboard.
It should be an hourglass when it is slow. The torchlight means it's searching for the files, folders, ect.
Answer:
if he took that ram off you and gave you that AND charged £40 then, YES. Youve just been bummed matey! Get that **** back and get your money back and try some lower frequency RAM, say 667MHz. Trial and error
